Agenda: August 02 - 08 / feat. Shigeo FUKUDA

Shigeo Fukuda at ddd gallery, Osaka
This week’s feature:
Shigeo Fukuda's "Visual Jumping" at ddd gallery, Osaka
The exhibition’s title, 'Visual Jumping' refers to an anecdote about Shigeo Fukuda who used to leap up from his chair, exclaiming "That’s it!", whenever inspiration struck him.
And so is his visual language -- leaping to the eyes. Using optical illusions and strong colors, he concisely conveys even complex messages, like disarmament and peace-keeping, in a striking and powerful way. Famous is his "Victory 1945" poster.
And since this week (on August 6th and coming Monday, August 9th) is the 65th anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, a closer look at his poster for the 50th anniversary of the bombing (left) and another of his anti-war posters (right) is a must.

Read more about Shigeo Fukuda on NYT and the ADC Hall of Fame.
Fukuda's quote, "I believe that design consists of 30% dignity, 20% beauty, and 50% absurdity." is also in the QUOTES BY JAPANESE DESIGNERS-widget on the sidebar of this blog.

For more exhibitions and events about art and design in Osaka rely on FLAG.

On the Agenda are events in Kyoto - and also in Osaka and Kobe - that I'm interested in and plan to attend -- shamelessly subjective.
Although the list isn't meant to be complete, I hope it provides some valuable tips for those interested in art and design in Kansai.

Kindly note that the above dates and times are subject to change.
